DIVORCE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

DIVORCE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN ARIZONA

Many people are aware of the unfortunate events that transpired in Arizona within the last week. If not, an ex-spouse went on a shooting spree killing 6 people who either played, or were believed by the suspect to have played, different roles in his divorce litigation.

This should be a reminder that a history of domestic violence, threats of domestic violence and/or warning signs that someone's mental health may be compromised (either situationally or historically) should not be ignored.

Domestic violence, by law, is defined many ways. This includes, but is not limited to, physical violence, harassment, abuse of a family pet, placing undisclosed tracking devices on one's vehicle, criminal damage (punching a hole in the wall, destroying a cell phone, etc.) and other acts. In fact, some people are the subject of legal domestic violence without even knowing.

To protect yourself and/or your children from domestic violence, you can obtain an Order of Protection barring the suspect from coming within a certain distance of you or certain physical locations. Please note, however, that this protection is only a piece of paper. Caution and awareness of one's surroundings must be vigorously exercised. Violation of Orders of Protection
